Civil rights group criticizes China for blocking YouTube

YouTube working to restore access to its users in China; site blocked since Monday

yesterday stepped up criticism of the Chinese government's decision to block access to the YouTube video-sharing site to users in the country, at least the second time it has done so in a year.

Access to YouTube has been blocked in China since Monday, according to Scott Rubin, a spokesman for YouTube Inc. "We do not know the reason for the blockage, and we're working as quickly as possible to restore access to our users in China," he said in an e-mail to Computerworld.

The site was blocked gradually starting Monday afternoon, and all users in China had lost access to YouTube at some point on Tuesday, he added. Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal quoted a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry as saying the government had "taken up management of the [YouTube] network according to the laws."

Brock N. Meeks, director of communications at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in a blog post yesterday that China has provided no reason for the blockage to YouTube, its parent company Google Inc. or to users in China. "Instead, Chinese officials are engaged in their own fanciful brand of obfuscation," he said.

"While Beijing may be operating with blinders on, the rest of the world is watching this game of geopolitical charades in crystal-clear, high-def," wrote Meeks. "The 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre is fast approaching, and the Chinese aren't taking any chances that subversive digital propaganda will trickle into their country on the bit stream."

This week's action isn't the first time that individual countries, including China, have blocked access to YouTube.

A year ago this month, for instance, the Chinese government blocked some Internet access amid rioting in Tibet. During that time, China blocked access to Google News and YouTube in what appeared to be an effort to stop the spread of video footage related to the rioting in several cities in Tibet, including the capital, Lhasa.

"There is a long history of China violating the international right of free expression," said Meeks. "On Monday, they flipped some switches, monitored some blinking LEDs on a console and choked off YouTube's air supply."

Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group, said that Chinese officials should be aware that although they can shut off access, information can still trickle through.

"There are millions of routes into and out of any country that has a decently developed tech infrastructure, and China definitely is in this category," he said. "China will soon discover, if they haven't resigned themselves to it already, that they can't have it both ways with the Internet. They can't use it as a tool to make their society and businesses more productive, and then expect that they can wall themselves off from anything they don't like. It isn't a faucet. It's a huge water pipe with only a semifunctional valve. It can't be turned off all the way anymore."

Army foils LeT infiltration bid
Lashkar warns of more attacks
Tribune News Service

Srinagar/New Delhi, March 25
Pakistan based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba today acknowledged its role in trying to push militants into India across the LOC. A Lashkar spokesman Abdulla Ghaznavi was quoted by a news agency as saying that attacks will continue on Indian soil and that the push at Kupwara was part of the LeT game plan.

The fierce encounter at Kupwara, that lasted for five days, signals stepped-up terrorist activities from across the border, warned Army chief General Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday. He said Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba, was attempting ‘the biggest push’ to infiltrate around 300 terrorists across the Line of Control into India.

Pakistani troops have been firing throughout last night at Indian posts in Uri sector, apparently to give cover to militants crossing over. The arms, ammunition and the sophisticated communication equipment recovered from the 17 militants killed in the encounter at Kupwara, said General Kapoor, also indicated the involvement of official agencies in Pakistan.

The Army has recovered 23 AK assault rifles, one pistol, four Under Barrel Grenade Launchers, 19 UBGL grenades, two hand grenades, two global positioning systems and 10 radio sets at Kupwara.

The encounter, which began on March 20, lasted five days and claimed the lives of 17 militants and eight security personnel.

Brigadier General Gurmeet Singh said in Srinagar that the terrorists couldn’t have accessed the weaponry without state backing. “The operation is still in progress. The majority of the terrorists have been killed. However, those who might have escaped, will also be eliminated,” said the Brigadier General.

All martyrs, including Major Mohit Sharma and jawan Shabir Ahmad Malik, were laid to rest in Jammu and Ganderbal in north Kashmir.

In New Delhi, the Army chief said 40 to 50 terror camps were operational on the other side of LoC in Pakistan, camps which kept shifting their locations. More terrorists were waiting to infiltrate once the conditions get conducive for crossing over.

On the highly sophisticated communication equipment used by terrorists during the encounter, the Army chief said, “Obviously they were contacting their handlers on the other side.” He added that the terrorists had received a fairly high level of training, which became obvious after the Mumbai attacks.

Asked why it took the Army so long to eliminate the terrorists in Kupwara, the Army chief said, “ In such a terrain where there is still snow, passes are still closed and reaching outlying areas is difficult, we killed 17 terrorists and recovered arms and equipment that indicate how well-prepared they were. It was a high-risk operation and in the event our boys did quite well.”

Obama overhauls US Afghan strategy

The Iraq-style troop surge is one part of a plan that hopes to bring stability through civilian know-how and a fresh Pakistan policy.

Since the United States invaded Iraq six years ago, its attention, effort, and military know-how has tilted toward the Gulf. Perhaps as soon as Friday, President Obama is expected to shift that focus, announcing a new strategy for Afghanistan and the neighbor with which it is entwined, Pakistan.

It is an announcement with echoes of the US "surge" in Iraq, when America increased its commitment to Iraq and turned to a new strategy that prioritized protecting Iraqis as much as killing terrorists. In the broadest terms, plans for Afghanistan will be along the same lines.

Yet the challenges presented by Afghanistan are an order of magnitude greater than they were in Iraq – involving a state with virtually no rule of law, a government rife with opium-fueled corruption, and an insurgency spanning two nations and entrenched in some of the world's most inhospitable terrain.

"Unlike Iraq and some of the other problems, this is an area where I've been somewhat uncertain in my own mind what the right path forward is," said Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently.

Given the scope of the task ahead – and the fact that priorities in Afghanistan have been long delayed by America's emphasis on Iraq – some in Washington are preaching patience.

"Whatever [the plan] is, it's going to be long-term," says one Republican staffer on Capitol Hill who was not authorized to speak with the media. "We're going to be spending money on Afghanistan for a long time."

Mr. Obama's plan is the culmination of input from various quarters of government, some of which continue to have fundamental differences over the ultimate goals for Afghanistan, just days before Obama is to announce the way ahead. Whether he will launch the plan with a formal announcement or simply begin its implementation more quietly was not clear Wednesday morning. Several media reports suggested that he could unveil the strategy Friday. Yet the broad brush strokes of the plan are already clear.

The 17,000 American troops Obama has promised for Afghanistan are expected to be crucial in bringing some measure of stability to the south, where British and Canadian forces have not been able to dislodge the Taliban from vast swaths of territory.

Unlike Iraq, where the insurgency was largely confined to urban areas, the insurgency in Afghanistan resides in wide-open, rural areas, posing a challenge to a small international force that has long been overstretched. Gen. David McKiernan has declared the south a "stalemate."

Yet the insurgency there is relatively isolated, according to NATO officials, who say that nearly three-quarters of the terrorist activities occur in only 5 percent of the country's more than 360 districts.

Once security is established in areas, the US and NATO may be able to reconcile with some elements of the insurgency – typically low-level insurgents who are driven more by economic realities than ideology – in a way that produces a similar outcome as that in Iraq, says a top official who could speak to the media only on condition of anonymity.

As with the Iraq surge, an increase of troops is seen as being only one element of the new Afghan strategy – and perhaps not the most important.

Page 1 | 2

"It's not a military solution to Afghanistan, period," says one American military officer with extensive experience in Afghanistan, who says the way to victory is not using the military alone but the so-called whole of government.

As in Iraq, the troops are seen as merely the means for providing some measure of security so that Afghanistan's other, deeper problems can be addressed.

Among them:

•A "civilian surge" will send Americans with wide-ranging expertise to Afghanistan to help it build its civilian institutions, which are largely inefficient or nonexistent. For example, the State Department is reportedly planning to send 14 foreign-service officers to Afghanistan – something experts and the military have been calling for for years, saying the US will only succeed if it increases Afghans' capacity to help themselves.

•The US will ask allies for more money and training to help build Afghanistan's police and Army – seen as key to the country's long-term stability. There are now only about 160,000 trained soldiers and police officers in a country that is larger and more populous than Iraq. Iraq now has about 600,000 police and soldiers. The New York Times has reported that some officials would like to increase the Afghan number to 400,000. A French plan to build a gendarme or paramilitary force to bridge a perceived gap between the police and the military is also under consideration, but several American officials dismissed it as unnecessary.

•The US will have to increase dramatically its counternarcotics role. Though NATO countries agreed last fall to target drug traffickers with their military forces in Afghanistan, there has been little action, both because of their limited resources and their belief that drug issues are a law enforcement issue, not a military concern. US officials disagree, contending that the poppy trade is central to the insurgency.

•The US is poised to send as much as $1.5 billion in nonmilitary aid to Pakistan. The goal is to address the roots of insurgency in Pakistan's tribal belt, where many terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan have their command-and-control hubs. Bringing development to this impoverished region is seen as one way of undercutting terrorists' influence.

In many ways, Pakistan presents far more difficult problems than does Afghanistan. While the US has a relatively free hand in Afghanistan, it must work through the civilian government in Pakistan, which has lurched from one crisis to the next and lacks popular support for antiterrorism campaigns. The Pakistan Army appears increasingly open to US concerns, but it is trained and equipped to fight India, not insurgents.

"They are totally incapable of conducting counterinsurgency [operations]," says one American official. "It's all about tanks, rockets, and strike fighters."

This is partly why the Obama administration has reportedly kept up its airstrikes inside Pakistan using drones. The Pentagon has also sent in up to 100 special forces soldiers to conduct counterinsurgency training inside the Pakistan border, and American officials hope Pakistan will be willing to accept more.

While the revamped mission in Afghanistan could take years, Obama seems to have his eye on the door at the same time, an echo of many allies who have made it clear their commitments are not indefinite. "So what we're looking for is a comprehensive strategy, and there's got to be an exit strategy," said Obama during a recent interview with the "60 Minutes" news program. "There's got to be a sense that this is not perpetual drift."

(Source: VOA)

(Kausar Ashfaq, Karachi)

(Source: Voice Of America)
The Art Of Dealing With People
(Mahwish Fatima, Karachi)
What is the quality that all successful people have in common? They have mastered the art of dealing with people! A human relation is the science of dealing with people in such a way that our egos and their egos remain intact. The reason 90 per cent of the people fail in life is failure to deal successfully with people. The doctors, the lawyers, the salesperson who enjoy the most success are not necessarily the ones who are the most skilled in their job. The husband and wife who are the happiest are not the ones who are the most attractive

Understanding the human ego
The first law of human relations is “people act or fail to act, largely to enhance their own egos.” Because the human ego is such a precious thing to its possessor, and because a person will go to all extremes to defend against what he perceives as threats to his ego, the word egotism has a negative connotation. Every human being is a special, individual personality, always ready to defend his ego against all enemies. That is why you cannot treat people as machines. If you are on good terms with yourself, you are on good terms with others. Ego-hunger is as universal and natural as the hunger for food. Ego of each person needs respect approval and a sense of accomplishment. A starved ego is a mean ego. When self-esteem is at a high level, people are easy to get along with. When self-esteem is at a low ebb, trouble comes easily. And when self-esteem gets low enough, almost anything can become a threat. To that person a critical look or a harsh word can seem like a calamity.Develop the habit of paying at least five sincere compliments each day and watch how much smoother your relations with others become. Help others to like themselves better and satisfy their hunger for self-esteem.
Making people feel important
Never make the mistake of assuming that just because someone is successful or famous, they have no need or feeling of importance.Courtesy and politeness are merely ways in which we acknowledge the importance of the other person. Little things that are apparently unimportant actions can have such tremendous consequences in the field of human relations. Remember that it takes only a small spark to start a fire. And little things you do and say can set off a chain reaction. If you want to make a good impression on others, the best way is to let them know that they impress you. You should know when to correct others. Ask yourself: does it make any real difference that they are right or wrong? Don’t try to win all the little battles! If nothing else is involved except the person’s ego, why bother?
Controlling the actions and attitudes of others
Dealing with others is as though we are standing before a mirror. When we smile, the person in the mirror smiles; when we frown, they frown; and when we shout, they shout back. Knowing this you can control others’ emotions to an amazing degree. When you find yourself in an explosive situation, lower the tone of your voice and keep it low. This will literally force others to keep their voices low, too.It is a sad but a true fact that many of mediocre ability get further than those who have outstanding talents because they know how to control their actions. Watch your walk; your physical actions express your mental attitude. See someone walking with head and eyes down and you are looking at a pessimistic soul. Use the magic switch of a smile. Everyone is blessed with a cute smile. It’s just a matter of letting it out. If you are not using your smile, you’re like someone with a million in the bank and no chequebook.
Attracting people
Those who accept and like people just as they are, have the most influence in changing others’ behaviour for the better. Approval means something more positive as it goes beyond just tolerating faults and find something we can like. You can always find something to approve of in others. It may be something small and insignificant. Seek things out, praise, and watch people glow! The word ‘appreciates’ means to raise in value. Stop and consider how others are valuable to you. We all want to be recognized for our own unique worth. Start using the triple ‘A’ formula for attracting people.
Learning to communicate effectively
One thing successful people have in common is the skill in using words. Earning power and word skill are so closely tied together that you can safely expect to increase your earnings simply by increasing your word power. Small talk is necessary to get the wheels of conversation turning. Realizing this will enable you to start a conversation even with a perfect stranger.Get people to talk about themselves. Try warming up the other person with words like “Where are you from? What do you think of our weather? What business are you in? These questions get the others talking about themselves. They break the ice as they see that you are interested in them. You don’t have to search for a topic of mutual interest. You start them off on the one topic they are expert in…themselves. You are a human, too, and it is natural to be tempted to talk about yourself. You want to shine; you want to impress others. But you will rate much higher in others’ estimation if you turn the conversation to them rather than to yourself. Others will have a much higher opinion of you.We make sarcastic remarks hoping that others will recognize our cleverness. Teasing and sarcastic remarks are both aimed at the self-esteem of others, and anything that threatens the self-esteem is a dangerous business, even when done in fun.
Listening
Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote, “To be able to listen to others in a sympathetic and understanding manner is perhaps the most effective mechanism in the world for getting along with the people and tying up their friendship for good.” Successful people encourage others to talk, and to keep on talking, while keeping their own mouths shut. You increase their self-esteem by this; for everyone likes to think that they have something to say that is worth saying.
Convincing others
When someone opposes our ideas, we take it as a threat to our ego. We become hostile and try to ram our ideas down our opponent’s throat. This is not the way to win. The only way to win an argument is to get others to change their minds in a friendly way. Tell someone their ideas are stupid and they will defend them forever. Use threats and they simply close their minds against your ideas, regardless of how good they may be. There is only one-way to get an idea accepted — by suggestion. Try to slip an idea into someone’s subconscious, more or less unnoticed.
Giving praise
Praise gives us new energy and new life. All you have to do is to give sincere praise to someone each day, and notice how it helps them to do better. If someone does you a small favour, show your appreciation and give them credit by saying ‘thank you.’ If there is someone who irritates you, begin looking for something for which you can compliment them. If they bite your head off, maybe they have nice teeth. So, compliment them on their teeth.
Criticizing without offending
The word ‘criticism’ leaves a bad taste in our mouths. The real art of criticism is not to beat others down, but to build them up. It is not to hurt feelings, but to help people do a better job. Criticism must be done in absolute privacy. The mildest form of criticism in the presence of others is likely to be resented. Preface criticism with a kind word or compliment. Make criticism impersonal; criticize the act, not the person.By pinpointing your criticism to their actions, you can pay them a compliment and build up their ego at the same time: “I know from past experience that this error is not typical of your usual performance.” Remember, to call attention to an error once is justified, twice is unnecessary, three times is nagging. Your goal in criticizing is to get a job done, not to win an ego fight.Skill in human relations is similar to skill in any other field, in that success depends on understanding and mastering certain basic general principles. The one successful way to get the things you want from life is to acquire skill in dealing with people.
PAULO COELHO...Messenger of Peace or Anarchy???
(Nishwa Munawar Qureshi, Lahore)
Paulo Coelho is one of the most influential and prolific author of our time. He is famous for his thought provoking books, which essentially propagate the message of love, peace, empathy, spirituality and personal enlightenment. His fascination with the spiritual quest dates back to his hippie days, when he traveled the world learning about secret societies, occult powers, oriental religions, etc. He was the most sold author in the world in 2003.His famous book “THE ALCHEMIST” was translated in 67 different languages and was edited in 150 countries. It was recorded as world’s most translated book in the Guinness book of World Record 2008. He is appointed as the Messenger of Peace for the UN.His provocative books have the power to change the destiny of a nation! His books provoke societal and intellectual debate. His work mainly deals with mysticism and deeply touches the spiritual aspects of human life. The legendary author serves as a lighthouse, for the ships that are lost in this vast ocean of life. He instills unique philosophical approach in his books that offers the reader to think in multiple ways and rotates the reasoning process by 360 degrees. The light of his work illuminates the reader’s mind and guides him towards the right paths. It tells intriguing tales of love, passion, mystery, dreams, destiny and life. No doubt his words hold the power of bringing revolutions, but if a deep analysis is conducted, the reality would be revealed that they are based merely on speculative philosophies. Perverse consternations are created by his words. In my point of view the ancient creeds of love and faith are wrongly represented by him. In his enchanting tales he creates a world of eccentric, irreverent, gauche and loony people, who believe that they are different and superior to a common man. Protagonists talk about spirituality and love of humanity but are essentially incredulous. Through his lubricious characters, author presents “LOVE”, as the panacea for all of the troubles of the world, but his assertions turn out to be completely frail and factitious. The concept of love is being misused by the writer to defend, baffled and licentious souls. Mostly youngsters get attracted to his work, and their sensitive minds very easily capture erroneous and ambiguous impressions. According to me, anarchy and disbelief are widely promoted by his work. We all know that everything has its pros and cons. HisA books help out young minds in following their dreams and personal legends so they can be used constructively, but only mature minds know the difference between the grey tones of morning and evening.

Democratic Challengers
(Jahanzeb, Gujranwala)
Democracy is a huge phenomenon for a setup like Pakistan politics, on which our political leadership and so called democratic forces of our nation, have been working for almost 63 years now. Well we haven’t seen so much of this yet I our country, but yes we have the western democracies to follow or may be an example of our neighbors country. As we’ve adopted a lot from the west over the years, as we’ve a mixed culture currently prevailing in our country, which seems to be more pro-western than anytime before in our history; but actually I don’t know why we can’t adopt this particular phenomenon. A reason stated by one of the ex-government representative quoted as: “West shouldn’t ask us to learn the lesson of democracy by this time, as they took 600 years to learn this by themselves”This statement might seem to be very convincing but we should look into the fact that the time they started this fight for democracy, there was no such phenomenon and they were at civil war. They fought for a cause in a situation where the whole west was uncivilized in many ways. And trying to apply that situation to ours is unjust. We’re at no civil war but what we have is just a political tug-of-war kind of situation. Our own democratically elected governments are destroying the democracy! The cause behind choosing a government by general public elections, and getting the representatives form the very public was never, betting on their political wars, but it is assumed that they’ll promote some development in the areas of public interest. The major blows suffered by our dream of democracy were because of several martial laws. In our history of 63 years now, we’ve managed to hold eight general public elections to form parliaments. A parliament is supposed to survive a five years period of its tenor, but unfortunately only one of them did managed to survive this long time span. Two of the previous seven were toppled by the interference of the army and all the others were victims of the political instability. Another major thing is that, in Pakistan no one can form a government without the full cooperation of the state actors, an example of this is the current government formed in Bolochistan Province, where PML had the majority till PPP stepped forward to form the government. And over the period of time, our oppositions have blamed the elections to be unfair… and just in months after the formation of government the opposition uses to blow the government by any means possible. The only parliament which completed it’s tenor, was a parliament that was fully supported by another army man, and that was the only reason behind this survival. Although the year 2007, was the worst for the Pakistan as the internal affairs were so much contaminated because of the lacking of positive policies, and this government opposition thing. But the opposition failed to put the PML government under pressure because the both ex-prime ministers were forced to stay out of politics as well the country, by an illegal effort by government at that time. It’s believed that in the times of true democracy, the parliament is the most powerful and supreme entity in the country but such definition are not covered by our constitution; which has been bandaged for 17 times till it was first applied in 1973. Being powerful, somehow our parliaments have managed to do this thing quite progressively. But now, when the current government has passed almost a year, our country is once more at stake because of this political conflict among the parties thing. In the elections held on 18th Feb 2008, both the major parties PPP and PML-N formed a coalition government and promised many a things they failed to do… they asked people to vote them to bring change in the country, they never kept their word, even to the promises they made with themselves. When the coalition was formed after the previous elections, it was decided or at least it was told that that coalition was up to three things: the first thing was to get the disposed off judges restored. The others were like separating the President at that time, Mr Pervaiz Musharaf, and the last was to remove the 17th amendment from the constitution. The first achievement of this government was to separate the president from the presidency… but as it appeared to happened PML-N separated itself from the PPP on some sensitive issues and from that time the traditional fighting between the two rival parties is going on. PPP got its co-chairman elected as the President and at that time the newly elected President promised the nation a few thing: to remove the 17th amendment to make the parliament more powerful and a few more.It was promised by both the parties that they will respect each others mandate in federal and provincial assemblies, so that it’ll be possible to start a new democratic regime in the country for the first time in the history. But how is it possible when PPP and PML-N both were mudding each others’ position and policies. Here PML-N joined the movement somewhere started by the lawyer and human right associations, for the reinstatement of the judges. Well in their times of coalition with PPP, none of the both parties presented any bill in the house to talk about or to be passed to get this thing happened, which PML-N tells to be its only cause behind participating in the previous elections. The major exchange of fire started in the February, when SC ended the case against the leadership of PML-N, leaving them disqualified for elections, this result might base on any reason but it once again sent us to the political times of mid 90s. Then PML-N started standing with the cause they left somewhere in earlier months. The leadership of the of lawyers’ movement had called for a long march on 12th of march, and after their being disqualified PML-N announced to be a part of this thing. No mater if this long march was successful because of the huge support of PML-N leadership and supporters, but now when judiciary is restored an several lawyers have showed their confidence in this act of the president and PM, why is it so that PML-N is still blaming the government for thing, those neither they did in their own regime. Now its been attribute to the PM:-N leadership that they are up to force the president to quit or at least the end of 17th amendment not by dialogues but by another long march, they have even announced a dead line of next march. And on the other hand its been attributed to the president that he doesn’t believe that PML-N’s government in the province will leave the federal government stable and he is up to form PPP government in Punjab. It has become a national crisis situation, where only the public will loose every thing, just because of the leadership of the two parties want to form a government. It’s been a dead-lock kind of situation where there are no more dialogues and even the west, whom never wanted us being stable is showing its concern about this.So on the behalf of my Nation, I just want to request the Leadership of two respective parties; if the care to become the leadership of this country instead of their parties? And this might be possible as they told us themselves, by putting the past behind and working on a national agenda! And this step is of the worth for whole country and its progress!!! 20th March, 2009

Great Democracy
(Tehzeeb Arif, Lahore)
Pakistan is a country of more than 160 million people. According to economic surveys our one third of the population is living below living standards. In 2009 due to world economic recession further increase in poverty is expected. It is to be noted that according to United Nation any person earning less than $2 per day comes under the bracket of poverty. But imagine a country where buying a single Roti costing Rs.5 seems difficult.Pakistani leadership claimed our country to be a democratic state. According to the constitution our country is run by elected members of National assembly NA constituting 342 members headed by Prime minister that represent 160 mln people of Pakistan. Here are some facts about benefits given to the members of national assembly MNAs who are entrusted with handling the fate of 160 mln people.Average monthly salary of an MNA ranges between Rs.120,000 to Rs.200,000. Allotted constitution expense is Rs.100,000 per month. Traveling concession (Rs.8 per Km) is Rs.48,000 per month for a visit to Islamabad and return up to 6000 Km. Daily BETA during assembly meets is Rs.500. All MNAs can travel free of cost in 1 class AC train for any number of times all over Pakistan. They have the facility of 40 free air trips in business class flight with a wife or PA. Electricity which is the biggest crises faced by Pakistan currently, they can use 50,000 units free of cost at home. Not only are this but local phone call charges free up to 170,000 calls.Estimated per year expense on an MNA is Rs.32 million which means 5 year expense will be Rs.160 million. After all this you can imagine how much 342 MNAs cost to our country. Are they worth it? When a common Pakistani can’t afford a Roti of Rs.5, do these entire great politicians deserve such high benefits? If that is what our leaders call democracy then think of a great democracy we are and great politicians we have!Written byTehzeeb ArifStudent of Punjab University

Life of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him)
(M. Furqan Khan, Karachi)
The Treaty Of HudaybiyahQuraysh had tried to destroy Islam but had failed. The number of Muslims grew and their armies increased from three hundred at the battle of Badr, seven hundred at the battle of Uhud, to three thousand at the battle of the Trench. After the annual fast of Ramadan, the Prophet (pbuh) had a dream, which indicated that the Muslims should go to Mecca for the pilgrimage. One thousand and four hundred Muslims got ready to go with him on the Lesser Pilgrimage called 'the `Umra'. They dressed in white and went unarmed to show Quraysh that they had come to make the pilgrimage and not to fight. When Quraysh heard that the Prophet (pbuh) was on his way, they sent troops with Khalid Ibn al-Walid to stop the Muslims from entering the city. To avoid meeting this small army the Prophet (pbuh) changed his route and led the men through rugged mountain passes. When they reached easier ground he told them, 'Say, we ask ALLAH's forgiveness and we repent towards Him ' At Hudaybiyah, south of Mecca, the Prophet's camel knelt down and refused to go any further. The Muslims thought she was either stubborn or tired, but the Prophet (pbuh) said: 'The same power that once stopped the elephant from entering Mecca is now stopping us!' He then ordered them to make camp, which they did, although they all hoped they would travel on to the sacred Kaabah the following day. On setting up camp, the believers were dismayed to find that the springs were almost dry. When he heard this the Messenger of ALLAH (pbuh) instructed a man called Najiyah to take the bowl of water in which he had performed his ablutions, pour it into the hollows where the small amount of spring water lay, and stir it with his arrows. Najiyah did as he was told and the fresh water gushed up so suddenly that he was hardly able to get out of the way in time. Messengers were sent to Quraysh to tell them that the Muslims had come only for the pilgrimage, to worship ALLAH at the Holy Kaabah, and that they wanted to enter the city peacefully. But Quraysh took no notice. Finally, the Prophet's son-in-law, Uthman Ibn Affan, a wise and respected man, was chosen to go, and the Muslims settled down to wait and see what news he would bring back. After they had waited a long time, the Muslims became very worried. At last they decided that he must have been killed. A state similar to that of Revelation then came upon the Prophet (pbuh). He gathered the Muslims around him under an acacia tree and asked them to swear their allegiance to him, which they did. This pact, which is mentioned in the Quraan, became known as the Treaty of Radwan (which means Paradise). Shortly after, Uthman Ibn Affan returned and the Muslims were relieved to see that no harm had come to him. Some Meccan warriors tried to attack the Muslim camp but were captured and brought before the Prophet (pbuh), who forgave them when they promise to stop attacking the Muslims. Soon after this, official messengers came from Quraysh and talks began for a peaceful settlement. A man called Suhayl ibn Amr was sent by the Meccans to work out a treaty. When the Prophet (pbuh) asked Ali to write 'In the Name of ALLAH, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful', on the top of the page, Suhayl objected, saying 'Write only: bismik ALLAHumma (in Thy name, 0 ALLAH). I don't know him as al-Rahman (the Most Gracious), al-Rahim (the most Merciful).' The Prophet (pbuh) agreed and dictated: 'This is a treaty between Muhammad the Messenger of ALLAH and Suhayl ibn Amr.' 'Stop!' cried Suhayl, 'I don't believe that you are RasulALLAH (the Messenger of ALLAH). If I thought you were ALLAH's Messenger, I wouldn't be fighting against you, would I?' Calmly, the Prophet (pbuh) agreed that he should be referred to in the treaty as Muhammad', son of Abd ALLAH. The Muslims were very upset at this, and Umar furiously cried out, 'Are you not ALLAH's Messenger, and are we not Muslims? How can we accept such treatment when we are right and they are wrong? This will make people laugh at our religion!' But the Prophet (pbuh) knew what was best and the Treaty of Hudaybiyah was signed. In this treaty the two sides agreed to stop fighting for a period of ten years. It was also agreed that the Muslims should go back to Medinah immediately but that they could return the following year for the pilgrimage. This pilgrimage would last three days. In addition, the treaty allowed Muslims wishing to leave Islam and return to Mecca to do so. It also permitted Meccans to leave and become Muslims provided they had the permission of their guardians. The Muslims agreed to send any Meccan who did not have their guardian's permission back to Mecca. Suhayl's son had come with his father with the idea of joining the Prophet (pbuh) but when the treaty was signed he was, of course, forced to return to Mecca. He cried bitterly. The Prophet (pbuh) said, '0 Abu Jandal, be patient and control yourself. ALLAH will provide relief and find a way out for you and others like you.' The majority of the Muslims were very disappointed when they heard the terms of the agreement and thought that it should not have been accepted. They did not realize that this was in fact a great victory for the Prophet (pbuh), which ALLAH would later confirm in a Revelation. The agreement made sure that the following year they would enter Mecca peacefully, and in time would result in Muslims becoming stronger and more respected throughout Arabia. At the time the treaty was signed the Muslims could not have foreseen that the number of people who would travel to Medinah to become Muslims in following year would be greater than in all the years before. Before the Muslims departed, they followed the Prophet's example of making sacrifice and either shaving or cutting their hair. Even though they were unable to visit the sacred mosque, their pilgrimage was accepted by ALLAH because it had been their true intention. On the return journey to Medinah, the 'Victory' chapter of the Quraan was revealed to the Prophet (pbuh). It begins: In the Name of ALLAH, the Beneficent, the Merciful “Surely We have given thee (0 Muhammad) a clear victory, That ALLAH may forgive thee of thy sin That which is past and that which is to come, And may complete His blessings upon thee, And may guide thee on the right path, And that ALLAH may help thee with mighty help”. (Quraan xlviii.1-3)Now most of those who left Mecca to join the Prophet (pbuh) without the consent of their guardians and were turned back by him as agreed, Did not in fact return to Mecca, but lived instead in groups along the seashore. Then they were joined by others who had left Mecca but these groups began to endanger Quraysh caravans which were passing by and disrupted their trade because of this, Quraysh told the Prophet (pbuh) that if he wanted to take these new Muslims, they would not ask for them to be returned. The young men, therefore, joined the Prophet (pbuh) and the people in Mecca and Medinah grew more at ease with one another. The young men from the seashore were shortly followed by those Muslims who were still living in Abyssinia, and soon the numbers of believers in Medinah had doubled. About this time, Khalid Ibn al-Walid, the great warrior who had defeated the Muslims at Uhud, set out from Mecca for Medinah. Along the way he met Amr Ibn al-As, the clever speaker who had pursued the Muslims when they fled to Abyssinia. Amr, who had attempted to find asylum in Abyssinia, had just returned from that country, the Negus having urged him to enter Islam. He asked Khalid, 'Where are you going?' Khalid replied, 'The way has become clear. The man is certainly a Prophet, and by ALLAH, I am going to become a Muslim. How much longer should I delay?' Amr Ibn al-As answered, 'I am travelling for the same reason. So they both traveled on to Medinah to join the Prophet(pbuh) . The two men were, however, worried about meeting the Prophet (pbuh) because of having fought against the Muslims in the past. Therefore, Amr came before ALLAH's Messenger he said, 'O Prophet, will my past faults be forgiven and no mention made of what has gone before?' The Prophet (pbuh) replied, Amr, "Islam wipes away everything that happened before, as does the hijrah.' A year after the signing of the Treaty of Hudaybiyah, the Prophet (pbuh) was able to lead two thousand pilgrims on the Umra. Quraysh vacated Mecca and watched the rites from the hills above the city. The agreed period of three days was observed, after which the Muslims returned to Medinah.
(Saleem Ullah Shaikh, Karachi)

(Rizwana, Karachi)

Computer Tips and Tricks
How to moving the taskbar
If you want to move your taskbar. Mostly I leave mine at the bottom, like the rest of the population, but occasionally I feel like going wild and have the taskbar at the top of my computer. The Taskbar is that thin bar at the bottom where you can see all your open programs, the start menu, the clock, etc. Now, in WinXP they made it very nice to move it. This is how:
Right Click on the Taskbar
Click, Lock the Taskbar, until there is no check there
Left Click on the task bar and move it to where you want it...it will always rest up against an edge, so top, left or right.
Then click, Lock the Taskbar, again and it won't move from that spot.
These are the same instructions for Windows 98, ME, 2k, only you don't have to unlock the taskbar, you just left click on it and move...this was easier, but also you sometimes accidentally moved the task bar when you didn't want it to move, ugh. Well, there you have it, now put your taskbar to the top and see if you like it.

How to Select Multiple files using the Ctrl Key
This is a very simple process. Here's what you do:
Click on the first file you want to move
Go to the second file you want to select before clicking this file, hold down the ctrl key and then click. You'll notice that both files are now selected
Repeat this process for as many files as you want to select at once
It's just so simple.

How to Remove Content Advisor Password in Internet Explorer
The following steps will remove any password set in the Internet Explorer Content Advisor and allow you to reset the program to its original state.
Click on Start and choose Run.
Type in RegEdit and select OK.
Now click on the little plus sign to the left of H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Continue to drill down, always clicking on the plus sign at the left of the named key, through Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version and Policies.
Now click on the Ratings folder.
In the right pane of the RegEdit window, you'll see an icon called Key. Click on it and press Delete.
Next, choose Registry and then Exit to exit RegEdit. You've just deleted your original Content Advisor password.
Restart the computer and run Internet Explorer again.
Choose View and then Internet Options (or Options for version 3.x). For IE 5 or greater, Click on Tools, Internet Options.
Click on the Content tab and click on Disable. When asked for a password, don't enter anything; just click on OK. This will disable Content Advisor because there's no longer a password.

How to Alphabetizing your Start Menu
In fact that if you go to try and find a program its actually becoming really hard because they're not alphabetized, new programs are stuck on the end, so forth and so on, well, this is a really quick, reallllly easy tip to organize your start menu in Windows XP (I think this also works in Win 98, but I'm upgrading my comp that has Win 98 and can't verify it). Here are the steps:
1 First click on the start button
2 Move your mouse to "All Programs"
3 Move your mouse to any of the folders there
4 Right Click
5 A box will open up, scroll to "Sort By Names" and
Like magic all the folders and programs will be alphabetized. This is one of those simple but useful things that will help you organize your computer, unless you really like searching around for programs (bet you also used to enjoy Where's Waldo when you were growing up). That's it for this tip, give it a try.
How to changing your Mouse Pointer

How to off / on the Autoplay CD Feature in Win XP
The Autoplay CD feature in Win XP launches every time you put a cd in and each time it will ask you, which application or which way you would want to view this cd you installed. Now, this is a great function if you just use your CD occasionally, but when I was installing all my programs on my Win XP box, the Autoplay thing got on my nerves in a big way. Here's the best way to handle the Autoplay situation...it also allows you to customize how Autoplay will function.
Go to "My Computer"
Go to your CD Rom Drive
Right Click and go to properties
The window above will open, click the autoplay tab
Once there they give you a number of options. In the box just below "Select a content type..." you can select the various file types that autoplay will run for. This is good if you want to customize your autoplay. If for example whenever a music cd is put in you want it to play automatically you just fill in the box that says: Select an action to perform---> Select play--->Hit Apply. Now whenever you put in a music cd it will autoplay in Windows Media player. If you don't want XP to take any action, just select "Take No Action" hit apply, and do that for all the media types that's available in that box.
This is the way you could customize your autoplay features. The only thing that I use autoplay for is blank cds, whenever I put on it. its opens Nero for me, but all the other autoplay features are off on my comp. If you want to restore it, just follow the same steps and hit restore defaults. There you have it, how to turn on / off and customize your Autoplay in Windows XP.
Slow Shutdown Problem
Some people have noticed that they are experiencing a really slow shutdown after installing Windows XP Home or Professional. Although this can be caused a number of ways, the most clear cut one so far is happening on systems with an Nvidia card installed with the latest set of drivers. A service called NVIDIA Driver Helper Service is loading up on start up and for whatever reason doesn't shut itself down properly. The service isn't needed and can also increase the amount of memory available to your system. Here is how to disable it.1- Go into your Control Panel2- Select Administrative Tools and then click on Services3- Right click on the file "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service" and then select STOP.4- To stop this loading up every time you boot up your PC Right click it again and select properties - then where the option "Startup Type" is shown - make sure it is set at Manual like we have shown in the image below.
For a Safer, faster XP Close Unwanted Services
To disable unneeded startup services for a safer, faster XP, use the "Services" Admin Tool (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services). If you are a single user of a non-networked machine, you can disable the following items, with no ill effect. Alerter Clip book Computer Browser Fast User Switching Human Interface Access Devices Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down) Messenger Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain) Net meeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security) Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security) Remote Procedure Call Locator Remote Registry (disabled for extra security) Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security) Server SSDP Discovery Service (this is for the utterly pointless "Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open) TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Telnet (disabled for extra security) Universal Plug and Play Device Host Upload Manager Windows Time Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks) Workstation
Disk Defragmenter
A very important new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This basically means that all boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. By default this option is enabled but some upgrade users have reported that it isn't on their setup.1. Start Regedit. 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction 3. Select Enable from the list on the right. 4. Right on it and select Modify. 5. Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable. 6. Reboot your computer.
20 things you didn't know about Windows XP
You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).
2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type 'gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).
3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.
4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.
5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.
6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.
7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.
8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.
9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.
10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.
11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.
12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.
13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.
14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.
15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.
16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.
17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.
18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP
The Search companion in Windows XP searches for hidden and system files differently than in earlier versions of Windows. This guide describes how to search for hidden or system files in Windows XP.
Search for Hidden or System Files By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden or system files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.
To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP: Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.
NOTE: You do not need to configure your computer to show hidden files in the Folder Options dialog box in Windows Explorer to find files with either the hidden or system attributes, but you need to configure your computer not to hide protected operating system files to find files with both the hidden and system attributes. Search Companion shares the Hide protected operating system files option (which hides files with both the system and hidden attributes) with the Folder Options dialog box Windows Explorer.
Set Permissions for Shared Files and Folders
Sharing of files and folders can be managed in two ways. If you chose simplified file sharing, your folders can be shared with everyone on your network or workgroup, or you can make your folders private. (This is how folders are shared in Windows 2000.) However, in Windows XP Professional, you can also set folder permissions for specific users or groups. To do this, you must first change the default setting, which is simple file sharing. To change this setting, follow these steps: •Open Control Panel, click Tools, and then click Folder Options. •Click the View tab, and scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings list. •Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box. •To manage folder permissions, browse to the folder in Windows Explorer, right–click the folder, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and assign permissions, such as Full Control, Modify, Read, and/or Write, to specific users.
You can set file and folder permissions only on drives formatted to use NTFS, and you must be the owner or have been granted permission to do so by the owner.
